The Best Places to Stay in Athens: Insiders’ Tips on the Best Neighborhoods for Your Visit

While most visitors head to Monastiraki, Thissio is a charming and fun alternative. If you want shops and restaurants but not as many crowds, Thissio is a great option. With lovely views of Mt. Lycabettus, it’s an appealing neighborhood that offers something different from other parts of Athens. While there aren’t any five-star hotels here (yet), there are plenty of stylish small hotels along with chic cafes and boutiques.

With narrow, cobblestone streets and traditional shops, Plaka is a tourist favorite. This historic neighborhood is very close to many of Athens’ top attractions—the Acropolis, Parliament and more. But be warned: Plaka can be overcrowded with tourists during peak season, so skip it if you don’t want a herd experience.
