Want to get into a new exercise routine or develop healthy eating habits? It’s not easy, but it can be done if you follow the steps below, from author Gretchen Rubin. She’s the author of several books about habit formation, including The Happiness Project and Better Than Before, and she has some great tips on how to create lasting changes in your daily routine.
1) Plan an implementation strategy
Planning how you’ll implement your healthy new habit can give you confidence and help prevent failure. Perhaps it’s as simple as setting an alarm on your phone or putting sticky notes in strategic places to remind yourself. Whatever your strategy, map out how and when you’ll form these habits. If necessary, plan for slips by building some escape hatches into your schedule—make it easy to fall back on old habits in case of setbacks.
2) Have a positive attitude
As you move forward in your health journey, it’s critical that you maintain a positive attitude. This isn’t about faking happiness or pretending like everything is rosy. The best way to be positive is by practicing gratitude.
